What is the Limestone District School Board?

In the Province of Ontario, Canada, the delivery of education for elementary and high school (secondary) is the responsibility of Boards of Education. The Limestone District School Board is one of over 100 publicly funded Boards in Ontario. Please note that most students in Ontario attend government (publicly funded) schools and not private schools.

As such, the Limestone Board serves elementary and secondary students living in and around the City of Kingston. Limestone operates 54 elementary schools and 12 high schools serving about 23,000 students.

Why the Name – Limestone?

Limestone is the type of rock that underlies most of this area. Many of the homes in older Kingston are made of Limestone. For this reason, Kingston is nicknamed the Limestone City.

What are the Responsibilities of a Board of Education?

The Limestone Board hires all staff associated with the school system. It is also responsible for delivering curriculum, professional development of staff, plus building and maintaining school buildings. In addition to regular elementary and secondary schools, the Limestone Board offers many non credit courses, language courses, summer programs, computer upgrading, and general interest courses for students of all ages.
